Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 208 (June 21, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John E. McCaslin, Jr. (ASN: 0-2014782/33395378), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 January 1951, in the vicinity of Yuhnyon-ni, Korea. On that day Company B was forced to withdraw from the village of Yuhnyon-ni due to intense enemy fire. Upon taking up new positions, it was learned that a United Nations Unit had left large stores of ammunition and supplies in the village. Lieutenant McCaslin volunteered to lead a patrol into the village to recover the equipment. Upon nearing the village the patrol was fired on by enemy automatic weapons. He immediately organized his patrol and ordered them to proceed to the village by way of a ditch which offered cover from the in-tense enemy fire. Lieutenant McCaslin, however, stood exposed to the enemy and fired at them with his rifle, inflicting several casualties and also drawing fire on himself and away from his men. Upon reaching the village and securing the equipment, the patrol started back but were again fired on by the enemy. Lieutenant McCaslin again drew fire upon himself thereby allowing the patrol to return to its lines without a casualty. Lieutenant McCaslin’s devotion to duty and outstanding courage reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
