The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Bryan V. Hubbard (ASN: 0-5420608), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military conflict with an armed hostile force as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2d Battalion, 4th Artillery, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 March 1967. Second Lieutenant Hubbard distinguished himself when given the mission of being the Forward Observer to accompany a small force of infantrymen and pathfinders assigned the mission of securing a landing zone for a heliborne operation near Tan An in the Republic of Vietnam. Soon after darkness had fallen the small unit of men was besieged by enemy small arms and machine gun fire and eventually surrounded. Lieutenant Hubbard helped position the men in a tight defensive perimeter and pinpoint a barrage of artillery rounds at times to within 50 meters of the limits of the perimeter, to drive back repeated enemy attacks. Without regard for his own safety he exposed himself to enemy fire while directing the fire of three artillery batteries simultaneously. While under constant attacks and enemy fire Lieutenant Hubbard reacted with superior judgment to each new situation and challenge and bring about the successful completion of the mission. Lieutenant Hubbard’s courageous actions, personal example and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division “Old Reliables,” and the United States Army.
