The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers), [then First Lieutenant] Richard Freeman McAdoo (ASN: 0-50609), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 65th Engineer Combat Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 July 1950, near Yongdong, Korea, the regimental combat team to which Captain McAdoo’s company was attached was threatened by strong enemy action on the flank in addition to heavy frontal attack. Hearing of this, Captain McAdoo without orders, proceeded seven miles over hazardous routes to contact the regimental combat team commander and make personal reconnaissance of the flank where his unit could be used. Returning to the company, he led it forward and established it on the flank where the hostile threat was eliminated. By his bold initiative and exemplary courage and military ability, Captain McAdoo rendered invaluable assistance to the hard-pressed infantry team. His actions reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Army.
