The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Andrew G. Mays (ASN: RA-13279561), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Private First Class Mays’ outpost was assaulted by a powerful enemy force near Ipsok, Korea, on 26 November 19509. Heedless of the intense small arms and automatic weapons fire, he manned his automatic rifle to cover effectively the displacement of his comrades. Although wounded, he refused to withdraw; he continued his devastating fire, and, when last seen, was advancing in the face of the hostile horde. Private First Class Mays’ courage, determination and selfless devotion to his fellow soldiers are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
