The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Henry E. Mayberry (ASN: 0-365642), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion (Motorized), 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 January 1951, in the vicinity of Suwon, Korea, Major Mayberry, observing troops of the 25th Infantry Division advancing toward firmly entrenched enemy positions, landed his plane near the command post and advised the commanding officer of the enemy concentration, enabling the friendly troops to avoid ambush by the enemy. Continuing the surveillance mission north and east of Osan-ni, Korea, he observed another enemy concentration of approximately three hundred troops. Noticing that Turkish troops were advancing toward the enemy, Major Mayberry, with no regard for his own safety, landed on an icy road within range of hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire to warn the allied force of the enemy’s presence. With this valuable information, the Turkish troops launched a successful attack, inflicting many enemy casualties. The exceptional gallantry displayed by Major Mayberry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
