The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Steven F. May (ASN: RA-12306788), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Tank Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 June 1951, near Simpo-dong, Korea, when Sergeant may’s tank hit a mine and immediately burst into flame, the crew dismounted and sought cover from the merciless barrage of small arms and automatic weapons fire sweeping the area. Shortly thereafter it was discovered that one of the members of the crew had not escaped from the burning tank. Sensing what had happened, Sergeant May dashed across the exposed terrain, removed the unconscious soldier from the tank, and carried him to a covered position some 300 yards away. Sergeant May’s gallantry and selfless concern for his comrade’s welfare reflects great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
