The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Kenneth B. May, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at an Aleutian Air Base in Alaska, on 21 September 1943. Private First Class May was one of a group of enlisted men who attempted to rescue the crew of a crashed airplane. After administering first aid to one man, these enlisted men fought their way through flames, smoke, and exploding ammunition and dragged two more men from the plane. They made a further attempt to remove a third man but were unsuccessful because of the intense heat. The courage displayed by Private First Class May, with complete disregard for his own safety, reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
