The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Shinichi Matsuo (ASN: RA-30123026), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 September 1950, near Kana, Korea, when the advance of the company was halted by heavy enemy resistance Sergeant First Class Matsuo manned a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a jeep, moved to the front of the column and advanced about 900 yards to deliver withering fire on the hostile forces. By his conspicuous courage and outstanding leadership, Sergeant First Class Matsuo assisted greatly in repelling the enemy, capturing five prisoners and allowing the column to advance. His actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
