The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Charles H. Massie (ASN: RA-13166558), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date his company was attacking Hill 201 which was defended by well-entrenched enemy forces supported by artillery, mortar and automatic weapons fire. The company was unable to reach the crest of the hill and formed a defensive perimeter on the forward slope and dug in for the night. Late that night Sergeant Massie hear noise coming form the vicinity of one of the gaps in the defensive line. Leaving his foxhole, he quietly moved forward to investigate and discovered a group of approximately 17 enemy soldiers attempting to infiltrate through the company. With complete indifference for his personal safety and disregarding the overwhelming odds, he intrepidly charged the enemy, killing seven of them and forcing the remainder to retreat. He pursued the enemy and killed two more before returning to his defensive position. His heroic charge enabled his company to hold its ground, remain in position, and finally accomplish its objective of driving the enemy from the hill. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Massie reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
