    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 102 (May 10, 1951), Amended by G. O. 292 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Cuillauha B. Martinez (ASN: RA-6950416), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Sergeant Martinez’ rifle platoon was assigned the mission to assault and seize enemy-held high ground. As the platoon pushed forward, it was met by such intense enemy mortar and small arms fire that the advance was halted and the platoon was pinned down. Sergeant Martinez, realizing that the platoon in this position would suffer heavily from the mortar fire, left his covered position and dashed forward into the face of the hostile fire, firing his weapon. In exposing himself to the enemy fire he was hit in the face by mortar fragments, but nevertheless continued his undaunted charge until he was once more struck by enemy fire. His fearless single-handed assault inspired his comrades who, leaving their covered positions, resumed the advance and seized the objective. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Martinez reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
