The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor), [then Second Lieutenant] Samuel R. Martin (ASN: 0-208044), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 25th Reconnaissance Company, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 27 November 1950, an attack by overwhelming numbers of enemy caused Captain Martin’s platoon to displace from the hill it was defending near Ipsok, Korea. Having reorganized his men despite the withering fire, he led them boldly in a counterassault. Although wounded by grenade fragments, he so inspired his tank and rifle team by his vigorous and courageous action that they regained the hill and secured the company flank. Captain Martin’s valorous leadership and exemplary determination reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
