The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Don C. Martin (ASN: RA-17218348), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date during an attack on well-fortified enemy positions, the company was subjected to intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire from well-built emplacements. Completely disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Martin moved his 57-mm. recoilless rifle squad to the forward elements of the unit in order to place effective fire on enemy positions. Under his direction, the men of his squad were able to destroy several enemy emplacements while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Due to Sergeant Martin’s courage and outstanding leadership the company was able to continue the assault and secure its objective with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Martin reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
