The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Carl P. Martin (ASN: RA-37614216), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 25th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. When an infantry company was isolated in the vicinity of Chir-won, Korea, on 4 September 1950, Sergeant First Class Martin although aware of the hazards involved, volunteered to man a machine gun mounted in an exposed position on an M-39 personnel carrier which was being used to haul ammunition and rations to the beleaguered company. Having successfully delivered the supplies, Sergeant First Class Martin was returning with a load of wounded when the vehicle encountered an enemy roadblock. Remaining in his exposed position, he delivered withering fire on the roadblock, until it was neutralized. Encountering a second roadblock, Sergeant First Class Martin again delivered effective fire until he was thrown from the vehicle by a grenade explosion which also damaged his machine gun. Recovering from the shock of the explosion, he again exposed himself to intense hostile fire to aid his assistant gunner who had been wounded and two men who had been pinned down by the enemy fire. After assuring that all men were accounted for, Sergeant First Class Martin accompanied the vehicle to the aid station. By his courageous devotion to duty, conspicuous bravery and selfless regard for the welfare of his comrades, Sergeant First Class Martin set an example worthy of emulation. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
