Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 40 (January 24, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Arthur F. Marth (ASN: US-55032425), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date, during an assault on heavily-fortified enemy positions, Sergeant Marth’s squad was pinned down by intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from an enemy bunker. Disregarding his personal safety, Sergeant Marth advanced through the intense hostile fire to a position from which he could employ effective fire upon the emplacement. Unable to secure his desired position, Sergeant Marth rose to his feet and assaulted the enemy emplacement firing his weapon and throwing grenades. He succeeded in destroying the enemy bunker completely and immediately rallied his squad forward. So inspired by his superb leadership and courage in the face of the enemy, his men advanced with fierce determination, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy and securing their objective. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Marth on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
