The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert A. Marr (ASN: 0-970188), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 7 December 1952, Lieutenant Marr led a squad of Company A, 1st Battalion, to “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea, with the mission of occupying positions thereon. When the patrol reached the base of “Jackson Heights”, Lieutenant Marr took four men and proceeded up the slope to the objective. Once there, they encountered such a heavy barrage of hostile mortar fire that they were forced to withdraw to more tenable positions. When regrouping, Lieutenant Marr discovered that the automatic-rifleman was left wounded on the hill. Lieutenant Marr, without regard for his personal safety, started back to recover the wounded man, but hostile machine gun fire forced him back. Seconds later he made another attempt only to be driven back by the hostile small arms and machine gun fire. Bravely defying the intense enemy fire the third time, he moved quickly to the side of the wounded man. With considerable difficulty, he carried the man across the fire swept terrain to a covered position, thereby saving the man’s life and inspiring the other men. Lieutenant Marr’s conspicuous gallantry and untiring devotion to duty and to his fellow soldiers reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
