The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Ira L. Marks (ASN: RA-18352332), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 October 1951 in the vicinity of Paeon, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Marks, a platoon leader, was providing supporting fire for the advancing riflemen who were assaulting a heavily fortified enemy-held hill. As the units advanced they met determined hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. Sergeant Marks realizing the need for greater fire power moved his 57-mm. recoilless rifle to an exposed position and employed heavy fire upon the enemy emplacement. He continued his action, inflicting numerous casualties on the hostile forces and destroyed several of their emplacements. As a result of his courageous action enemy fire was neutralized, thus enabling friendly forces to advance and successfully secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Marks on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
