The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Joe Willie Marigna (ASN: US-53076777), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 22 November 1951, near Kojanhari-saemol, Korea, elements of Company I were occupying defensive positions on an outpost approximately 1000 yards in front of the friendly main line of resistance when a numerically superior hostile force launched a tremendous attack against the outpost. In the face of the overwhelming foe, the friendly force was ordered to withdraw to friendly lines. Private Marigna voluntarily remained behind to cover the withdrawal of his comrades. Disregarding his personal safety he steadfastly remained in his hazardous position, firing a lethal hail of bullets into the on rushing foe, until his position was overrun and he was mortally wounded. His courageous and determined actions were instrumental in killing fifteen enemy soldiers and enabled his fellow soldiers to return safely to friendly positions. Private Marigna’s outstanding gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
