The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Charles H. Marcy (ASN: 0-738436), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Pilot of a B-17 aircraft of the 710th Bombardment Squadron, 447th Bombardment Group (Heavy), EIGHTH Air Force, on a combat mission to Berlin, Germany, on 29 April 1944. Just prior to bombs away, Lieutenant Marcy was wounded by a burst of flak, but he continued to fly the airplane and drop bombs on the target. Forced out of formation, the bomber was attacked by enemy fighters, which set it afire, and Lieutenant Marcy was wounded again. Despite his painful wounds, Lieutenant Marcy held the airplane in level flight while the crew made good their escape. The cool courage and heroic devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Marcy on this occasion reflect the highest credit on himself and the Army Air Forces.
