The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George M. Mapes (ASN: RA-16111851), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Reconnaissance Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 16 September 1951, near Won-ni, Korea, Corporal Mapes’ squad, having been repulsed twice in the assault on Hill 488, was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Observing that one machine gun emplacement was instrumental in checking the squad’s advance, Corporal Mapes, voluntarily and single-handedly, charged the hostile position. Heedless of the withering fire concentrated upon him, he advanced to within ten yards of the weapon and killed the two enemy soldiers manning the gun. Sergeant Mapes’ inspirational initiative, courage, and gallantry reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
