Headquarters, 24th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 321 (April 15, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Warren J. Mantooth (ASN: RA-14323990), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Inchon, Korea, on 31 January 1951. His company was leading in the attack on the strongly enemy hill positions. The hilltop was obscured by fog making it extremely difficult to ascertain the enemy positions. From these positions the enemy was laying down an intense volume of small arms fire and grenades on the company. Observing that the enemy fire was increasing and becoming more effective, jeopardizing the company’s positions, he completely disregarded personal safety and deliberately exposed himself to the withering hail of fire and placed his machinegun in a forward firing position on an exposed slope. From this vantage point he fired his machine gun on the enemy troops, forcing them to reveal their exact positions by drawing the enemy fire to his position. His bold initiative and intrepid action allowed the company to move in upon the enemy emplacements, destroy their gun positions, and seizing its objectives. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Mantooth, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
