The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Cloyce Leland Mangas (ASN: 0-62343), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 64th Heavy Tank Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 May 1951, in the vicinity of Uijongbu, Korea, the lead platoon of an armored column received small arms and mortar fire from the low hills extending across the valley. Quickly analyzing the situation, Lieutenant Mangas voluntarily led his tank platoon in an assault on the hill without the benefit of infantry support. While standing exposed in the turret of his tank, he instructed and encouraged the members of the unit. When the approach to the objective was impeded by two tank traps which were under constant enemy fire, Lieutenant Mangas skillfully maneuvered the tanks over the first obstacle by filling in the ditch with discarded oil drums and other material. Discovering that the depth of the second trap prevented any possible crossing, he made a personal reconnaissance and found a suitable by-pass, enabling the unit to continue its advance. Lieutenant Mangas’ gallantry, initiative, and selfless devotion to duty materially contributed to the ultimate success of the mission and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
