The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Arthur F. Malone (ASN: 0-1169230), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 169th Field Artillery Battalion, 43d Infantry Division, in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 26 July 1943. When a party of infantrymen was subjected to intense enemy mortar and artillery fire near his forward observation post, Lieutenant Malone observed two men fall to the ground, one was dead and the other severely wounded. Leaving the protection of his foxhole he courageously crawled to the wounded man and brought him back safely to cover where he administered first aid. On 28 July 1943, Lieutenant Malone was killed in action while with an infantry assault company.
