Major, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 558th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Armored Division, in action in January 1945, in the European Theater of Operations. Second Lieutenant Major was assigned to a cavalry platoon which had the mission of assaulting a heavily fortified enemy strong point. A strong enemy counterattack was developing on the platoon’s flank and Lieutenant Major volunteered to go forward and direct artillery fire. Advancing to a point within fifty yards of the German lines, he unhesitatingly called for artillery concentrations to be laid down just ahead of his position. He courageously and coolly continued to direct his fire until the accurate and devastating barrage had routed the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 7th Armored Division, and the United States Army.
