The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Herbert F. Mains (ASN: RA-13249892), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date, during Company K’s attack on an enemy-held strongpoint, intense fire from well concealed hostile emplacements threatened to halt its advance. Realizing the serious threat to the success of his unit’s mission, Corporal Mains fully exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to better locate the enemy positions. With utter disregard for his personal safety, he permitted the enemy to fire upon him until he was certain of the enemy’s location. He then unleashed a heavy volume of fire upon the hostile positions, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy, thus enabling friendly elements to continue their assault with a minimum of casualties. His selfless devotion to duty and courageous efforts were an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Mains on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
