The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) J. Edward Boyle, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Varennes, France, 26 September 1918. While bringing his company into position Captain Boyle was severely wounded, being struck in eleven places by fragments of high-explosive shells. Seeing that his being wounded and the enemy fire had caused some disorganization of his command, he assembled his platoon and section leaders, assigned them their missions and although bleeding profusely, set them an example of coolness and bravery. Inspired by his bravery, the company moved forward, getting into action at a critical period of the fight.
