The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry J. Maihafer (ASN: 0-59167), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Pohang-dong, Korea, on 3 September 1950. First Lieutenant Maihafer was leading his platoon in an attack with the mission of occupying two enemy-held hills when the enemy placed exceptionally heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire on the platoon, inflicting heavy casualties and causing momentary disorganization. Completely disregarding personal safety he exposed himself to the intense enemy fire in a savage assault on the enemy’s position. The spirit attack completely disorganized the enemy troops and they withdrew from their positions in confusion, suffering heavy casualties. First Lieutenant Maihafer swiftly reorganized his platoon and led his men in the attack on their second objective. After securing the second objective, After securing the second objective, he observed that his platoon was all that was protecting the battalion’s left flank. Displaying outstanding leadership and professional knowledge, he moved his platoon into the defensive positions on the highest ground in the area. He then moved through heavy enemy fire to the Company Command Post and after learning that his company’s position was 4,000 yards in front of friendly units, he returned to his platoon. Throughout the night he remained in his forward position and directed friendly artillery fire on enemy patrols and positions. His outstanding leadership, courage, and professional ability were directly responsible for the successful completion of the mission and prevented enemy infiltrators from moving behind the battalion’s position during the night. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Maihafer, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
