The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal James Franklin Martin, Jr. (ASN: RA-18292840), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, during an attack on well-fortified enemy positions, Company C was subjected to intense hostile fire from well emplaced bunkers. Corporal Martin, with complete disregard for his personal safety, assaulted these emplacements throwing hand grenades, inflicting numerous casualties upon the hostile force. He continued this action until enemy fire fatally wounded him. His courage and devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and enabled them to advance and secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Martin on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
