The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Frank Magill, Jr. (ASN: 0-1302837), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 24 November 1951, near Kang So-Ri, Korea, Company E received orders to relieve Company F which was defending Hill 355 against a large assaulting hostile force. Captain Magill, “E” Company’s Commander, directed his men to establish strategic positions on the ridge and maintained control of his unit by fearlessly exposing himself to the devastating barrage and small arms fire, as he moved from position to position across open terrain reassuring and encouraging his troops. When artillery fragments fractured several of his ribs, he refused medical aid and continued to lead his unit in repulsing the charging enemy many times during the eight hour long engagement. Captain Magill’s gallantry and exemplary initiative reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
