Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 292 (August 24, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Eugene H. Madison (ASN: RA-19086060), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Madison was a member of a company sized combat raiding party that was pinned down by heavy enemy artillery, mortar and automatic weapons fire while attacking enemy held Hill 252. During this exceptionally bitter engagement many of the friendly troops, including the Company Commander, became casualties. When the company Commander was badly wounded that he could no longer command his unit, Sergeant Madison, under cover of darkness, carried him to safety through enemy fire and enemy controlled territory. Sergeant Madison then returned to his position, reorganized his troops and pressed the assault on the enemy positions. At the completion of the assault, Sergeant Madison aided in the evacuation of many of the wounded. Through his reorganization of the friendly forces, many lives were saved, and all of the wounded were evacuated. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Madison is in keeping with the highest traditions and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
