The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Joseph A. Boyd (ASN: 540794), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, France, 12 and 14 October 1918. Sergeant Boyd returned to his company on 11 October and due to his poor physical condition on account of wounds received in June he was directed to remain with the kitchen. Upon hearing of the heavy casualties of officers and noncommissioned officers in his company he voluntarily joined his company and showed great initiative in leading a platoon in the attack of 12 October. On 13 October while gallantly leading his platoon in attack, Sergeant Boyd was killed by shell fire.
