The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Clyde M. Boyd (ASN: 92171), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 166th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Suippes, France, 14 and 15 July 1918. Private Boyd’s position as 37-millimeter gunner was subjected to an all-night shelling, so intense that, although wounded, he would not allow his comrades to carry him to safety until the bombardment slackened. He remained for three hours after being wounded, and when examined it was found that he had received 22 wounds.
