Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 507 (November 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Eugene P. MacDonald (ASN: US-51020384), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 17 August 1951, a powerful enemy force attacked F Company’s positions near Pongyang-Dong, Korea, under the cover of darkness and a driving rainstorm. In front of the company perimeter approximately 1000 yards away, an outpost was stationed in order that it might repel any light hostile assault and, in the event of a heavy attack, to alert the main defense line. The hostile forces’ initial charge, however, swept past the outpost, which was subjected to much enemy fire, that it killed two of the four men occupying the position and wounded Private MacDonald, who, after ordering the fourth man to seek safety within the company perimeter, continued the fight, inflicting a number of casualties upon the foe. When the enemy withdrew from the area they sprayed the outpost with savage bursts of fire and left Private MacDonald for dead. After the hostile troops had abandoned the area, Private MacDonald, grievously wounded by nine individual wounds, attempted to crawl back to company lines, but, unable to do so, collapsed on the way where he was later found by a friendly patrol which evacuated him to the rear. The superb fortitude and gallantry in action exhibited by Private MacDonald on this occasion reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
