The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Silas Edward Bowman (ASN: 1308160), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Premont, France, October 7 – 9, 1918. For three successive days Private Bowman carried messages over ground swept by machine-gun fire and heavy shelling. He disregarded personal safety, and was instrumental in establishing liaison with units in the vicinity.
