Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 63 (March 9, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) James Lynn, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Operations and Training staff officer with Headquarters, 49th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Hoengsong, Korea, on 12 February 1951 and 13 February 1951. On these dates, when a strong enemy force attacked a convoy of the 49th Field Artillery Battalion, intense automatic, small arms and mortar fire and grenades forced the convoy personnel to leave their vehicles and seek cover in ditches along the road. At that time, Major Lynn was at the rear of the artillery portion of the task force column. During the ambush, he moved up and down the column ordering the removal of the destroyed, damaged and burning vehicles while the column was under a continuing, heavy volume of fire. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he repeatedly left a position of cover to clear the road and get the column moving. The calmness and daring with which he went about his tasks spread continuously among the men causing them to exert their utmost energy towards getting their equipment through the withering fire and instilled in them a reluctance to abandon their equipment and keeping the casualty rate at a minimum. Major Lynn’s gallantry and courageous actions reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
