By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William R. Albus, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Albus performed the duties of Battalion Gas Officer in Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. He also acted as Battalion Observer and Liaison Officer with a front line Infantry Battalion. Energetic and untiring in performance of duty, he at various times displayed extraordinary heroism in returning information to his battalion commander, thereby correcting erroneous reports of Infantry movements received from other sources. He voluntarily left shelter and under heavies shell fire rescued two wounded French soldiers and assisted them to a dressing station. As Forward Observer he showed great ingenuity and pluck in establishing a new Observation Post after the old Observation Post was destroyed by enemy shell fire.
