The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Armor) David M. Bowes, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 304th Brigade, Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, near Varennes, France, 26 September 1918. Second Lieutenant Bowes crawled forward under heavy fire at the risk of his own life and rescued a wounded soldier, who was lying about 150 meters in front of the trenches occupied by the advanced Infantry.
