The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harold Patrick Lynch (ASN: RA-12350985), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 January 1951, in the vicinity of Kumyangjang-ni, Korea, Private Lynch was aid man in a unit which was engaged in battle with a well dug-in enemy force. During the battle, Private Lynch, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, left the safety of a rice paddy dike, dashed through withering heavy weapons fire to reach and give aid to a wounded comrade. He treated the wounded soldier and placed him in a jeep to be evacuated. Shortly thereafter, seeing another soldier fall wounded in the rice paddy, he again braved the barrage of enemy bullets to reach and succor the fallen man, but was himself cut down and fell mortally wounded inches short of his goal. The courage, gallantry, and devotion to duty displayed by Private Lynch reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
