The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Edmond F. Lynagh (ASN: RA-7021251), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Lynagh was being evacuated in a medical vehicle after having been wounded in the foot. While proceeding to the rear in a convoy led by tanks, the column ran into an enemy ambush and was subjected to murderous automatic weapons, small arms and mortar fire. A disabled vehicle was blocking the narrow road and prevented any further progress. Realizing that the entire convoy would be doomed to annihilation unless the movement got under way again without further delay, Sergeant Lynagh leaped from his litter and, shouting words of encouragement to the men along the way, worked his way forward through the debris of destroyed equipment. When he reached the head of the column and saw that the commander of the lead tank had been killed, Sergeant Lynagh, despite his serious and painful wound, climbed aboard the tank. From his exposed position, he calmly directed cannon and machine gun fire on the enemy positions, causing the destruction of at least two hostile machine guns and killing numerous enemy. Knocked off the tank by a mortar burst, Sergeant Lynagh in utter defiance of the heavy enemy fire, immediately remounted the tank and directed it to better firing positions. His courageous action resulted in clearing the pass and enabling the convoy to resume its movement end break out of the ambush The gallantry and heroic leadership in the face of gravest odds demonstrated by Sergeant Lynagh reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
