The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ralph L. Luzader (ASN: 0-2008798), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mungelugni, Korea. On this date Company I launched a fierce attack against vital positions defended by a numerically superior hostile force. Disregarding the intense enemy fire, Lieutenant Luzader led his assault platoon over the mountainous terrain with a spirit of determination that soon inspired his men to advance with renewed courage. Although wounded by fragments from an enemy grenade, Lieutenant Luzader refused to leave his position for medical treatment. Ignoring his wound he continued to lead his men, shouting words of encouragement and directing their fire until the hostile forces were driven from their entrenchments suffering heavy casualties. As a result of his courageous action and aggressive leadership his unit was able to secure its objective successfully. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Luzader on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
