The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Samuel Ayer Lutterloh (ASN: 0-64100), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Lutterloh, a Platoon Leader, organized a patrol to rescue wounded members of a raiding party which had been operating in front of the Company K sector. The area which Lieutenant Lutterloh entered with his patrol, was heavily mined and continuously subjected to heavy artillery and mortar fire. He made repeated trips into this area, each time guiding back walking wounded and dispatching litter bearers with the seriously wounded. He was directly responsible for the saving of many lives and the prevention of capture of many American soldiers. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Lutterloh reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
