The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles W. Luster (ASN: RA-19300471), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 11 February 1951, in the vicinity of Sansong-ni, Korea, accompanied by another enlisted man, Private Luster voluntarily crawled forward under intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire to aid in recovering the body of a mortally wounded officer. While covering his companion with supporting machine gun fire, Private Luster was severely wounded in the chest but he courageously continued firing until the body was successfully removed. He then painfully crawled back to a covered position where he received medical attention. Private Luster’s outstanding gallantry and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
