The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Norman J. Lumb (ASN: RA-11201368), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 February 1951, near Ip-o-ri, Korea. On that date he was ammunition bearer for a 57-mm. rifle squad of an infantry company which was defending high ground within the regimental perimeter. During the early hours on that date the unit was subjected to heavy enemy mortar and artillery barrages which continued throughout the day. When his gun had exhausted its ammunition, Private Lumb volunteered to go to the rear for a re-supply of ammunition in spite of the fact that the route over which he had to travel was under enemy small arms and mortar fire. As soon as he exposed himself, the enemy opened fire upon him with a machine gun. Crawling from covered position to covered position, he was able to reach hand-grenade range of the gun, and eliminated the enemy gun position. He then continued on his mission and returned with the much needed supply. It was while distributing this ammunition that he was mortally-wounded. His courageous action contributed materially to the success of his unit in holding its positions and in repulsing the enemy attacks. The gallant conduct of Private Lumb on this occasion reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
