The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Daniel Lujan (ASN: 39571662), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, in rescuing a fellow soldier from drowning at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 21 May 1944, while serving with Company I, 164th Infantry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal). When the swimmer had become exhausted trying to reach the beach after being carried out into deep water by a strong undertow, Private First Class Lujan immediately went to his aid. Although the man had submerged for the third time, Private First Class Lujan repeatedly dove until he located the man and then held him above water until a rubber raft was launched which picked them up. His alert action in the face of great danger saved the stricken man’s life.
