The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Alex M. Lujan (ASN: RA-19324479), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 May 1951 in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that date he was leading a squad of infantry to attack and seize a vital sector of enemy-held high ground, overlooking the main supply route. The well-entrenched enemy showered his squad with intense small arms fire and hand grenades, making the ascent extremely hazardous and difficult. Sergeant Lujan, in a gallant display of aggressiveness and courage, fearlessly attacked the enemy’s right flank, where he made a firm stand and led his squad into the final assault upon the enemy position. After a hand-to-hand bayonet battle which caused numerous enemy casualties, he secured the objective. The courageous leadership displayed by Sergeant Lujan reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
