The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Ferdinand Lugo-Ortiz (ASN: US-50101995), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 December 1951, near Sangnyon-Myon, Korea, Company G was given the mission of attacking a well-entrenched enemy on Hill 200. During this action Sergeant Lugo-Ortiz, a squad leader, realizing that only a few men were left of his platoon, quickly reorganized them and fearlessly led the assault through devastating enemy artillery, mortar, and small-arms fire; reaching the top they destroyed all hostile bunkers and remained until ordered to withdraw. On his return to friendly lines he carried two automatic-weapons, five rifles, and one lite machine-gun, despite the fact that he was suffering from a head wound. Sergeant Lugo-Ortiz’ heroic actions contributed to the unit’s successful mission and saved needed equipment which reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
