The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William T. Loyd (ASN: 0-1925647), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 26 May 1953, volunteer elements of the 3d Battalion had the mission of attacking an enemy-held position in the vicinity of Manyon-Ni, Korea, to capture a prisoner for intelligence purposes. As the friendly raiding party commenced their attack, Lieutenant Loyd, leader of the capturing group, stormed the enemy-held position leading his men. Upon reaching the summit he threw grenades into the enemy bunkers and trenches and directed his men to their assigned tasks. When observing several enemy soldiers throwing grenades from a nearby bunker, he immediately left his covered position, and worked his way over to the soldiers. Upon reaching their position, he fired his weapon directly into the aperture and mortally wounded the enemy occupants of the bunker. When the raiding party prepared to return to friendly lines, Lieutenant Loyd directed his men to remain in position and provided cover fire, thereby assuring a speedy and safe retrograde movement. Lieutenant Loyd’s outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
