The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Dennis E. Firestone, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 6 June 1969, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company M, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Captain Firestone was commanding a combined friendly force which was assaulting an estimated two companies of North Vietnamese Army soldiers. As the combined elements closed on the determined enemy force, Captain Firestone continually exposed himself to the withering hail of hostile fire as he directed and coordinated his armored and infantry elements in their successful rout of the enemy force from their base camp. His determination and inspiring leadership were directly responsible for routing the enemy, resulting in thirty-six enemy killed in action with few friendly casualties. Captain Firestone’s gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
