The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Alfred N. Lowder (ASN: 0-2003253), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 November 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Lowder was leading a twenty-five man patrol which had set up an ambush for enemy forces near the village of Agok, North Korea. At approximately 2335 hours the order to withdraw and return to friendly lines was given. As the friendly force was withdrawing, they were suddenly met with a vicious hail of enemy machine gun, automatic weapons, small arms and grenade fire from an enemy ambush, estimated to be of platoon size. Although seriously wounded in the initial attack Lieutenant Lowder remained conscious and alert, directing the route of the withdrawal, calling in as each checkpoint was reached and encouraging his men. He remained calm and was able to give the special pass-word which was unknown to the remaining members of the patrol, upon reaching friendly lines. Shortly after reaching the Main Line of Resistance he lost consciousness and later died while being evacuated to an aid station. The great physical stamina, consummate devotion to duty and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Lowder reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
