The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert V. Loveday (ASN: RA-15292192), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date Company L was under attack by a numerically superior enemy force. Private Loveday, a member of the 57-mm. recoilless rifle section, volunteered to carry machine gun ammunition over the hazardous terrain under hostile observation and fire. He made repeated trips over the fire-swept area, carrying the vital ammunition, until he was fatally wounded by the enemy fire. Through his self-sacrificing devotion to duty, his unit was able to continue the assault and inflict heavy losses upon the enemy. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Loveday on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
