The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Charles William Love, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, III Corps. Staff Sergeant Love distinguished himself while serving as an Advisor to the 196th Regional Forces Company operating with Troop A and Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Troop A was engaged in a reconnaissance north of Loc Ninh when they were engaged by an estimated North Vietnamese Army Company. As Sergeant Love was checking the area to the front of Troop A, he began receiving enemy small arms fire from his right flank. Jumping up from his position, Sergeant Love fearlessly exposed himself to the hostile fire and aggressively directed the ground forces in an assault upon the enemy’s position, causing them to break contact and flee the area. Staff Sergeant Love’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
